I WRITE in response to two items in The Press of June 18.
1. Elizabeth Heaps, Pro-Vice Chancellor of the University of York, is against the “article 4 direction”.
Of course she is, she doesn’t live anywhere near noisy students, and have them playing music or football at 2am in the morning or university cars blocking her road. It’s not her area that is being ruined with nice family homes being turned into vast single-occupant conclaves.
2. Prof David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, is in favour, along with the leader of our council, of taking over Union Terrace car park. Let’s have another few thousand students! Never mind that York is supposed to be a place people come to visit.
Let’s make it as inconvenient as we can to visit. Why would he care if Gillygate goes under: he’s bringing more jobs our way?
Oh, and don’t forget that all these students need housing, which for some reason isn’t the responsibility of either university.
Come on City of York Council, use some common sense.
Bring in the “article 4 direction” to protect your voters and keep York a city people like to live in.
Rita Crombleholme, Deramore Drive, Badger Hill, York.
