As a new councillor, I am increasingly aware of the importance of volunteering in sustaining community groups. These groups are improving life for local residents, and many want new recruits.
A lot has been happening in recent years to promote volunteering among young people, particularly under the previous Labour Government, and they can bring valuable skills that will enhance the work that community groups undertake.
I’m keen to continue promoting volunteering in our city and also want people to bring forward modern ideas on communicating and the recruitment of new members.
Folk could be trained up to do things like run websites, email out newsletters or train other volunteers. It’s fun making a difference, building up skills and CVs, giving to society and the sense of satisfaction that comes from doing something worthwhile. If you live in, or near, Dringhouses and Woodthorpe and are looking for opportunities to help your community to be vibrant and to flourish, please email me at cllr.asemlyen@york.gov.uk or phone 01904 654355.
Coun Anna Semlyen, Grange Street, York.
