A GROUP of men boarded a train at York and racially abused two Asian women in a “despicable” attack, say police.
About 20 men got on the Kings Cross to Sunderland Grand Central train service at 6.40pm in York on Saturday, June 18.
The incident happened between 6.40pm and 8pm between York and Hartlepool.
Police have launched an investigation and scoured CCTV footage to identify the men and are appealing for witnesses who know those responsible or were on the train to come forward. The men left the train at Hartlepool and are believed to be from the east Durham area.
Sgt Nigel Ashworth, of British Transport Police, said: “Throughout the journey they shouted racial abuse at two Asian females onboard. They also abused other passengers, including the parents of a child who contacted police to complain.
“Racist abuse of any sort is unacceptable, but the nature of the insults levelled at passengers in the carriage was despicable.
“Everyone has the right to travel without fear of abuse or threatening behaviour, and when that behaviour is further exacerbated by racist undertones, our stance becomes firmer still.”
