BRITISH siblings Kitty, Daisy and Lewis apparently count Chris Martin and Amy Winehouse among their celebrity fans, and while there’s nothing on Smoking In Heaven to remind the listener of Coldplay, the majority of the album has a Winehouse-like 40s and 50s-tint to it.
The whole thing was recorded on vintage instruments and recording equipment, and throughout, Kitty and Daisy’s vocals are strong, if interchangeable, and the multi-instrumental talents of all three cannot be denied. The result sounds authentically retro, with the band belting out tracks such as I’m Going Back and Paan Man Boogie with enthusiasm and style, and it’s often hard to believe some numbers aren’t covers of much older standards.
Elsewhere there’s a modern, R&B feel to tracks, most evident on Messing With My Life, and I’m So Sorry uses the lazy brass section and guitar flicks that Paolo Nutini and No Doubt are so fond of.
