A CALAMITOUS second round of 80 ended Simon Dyson’s interests in the French Open in Paris.
The nine-over-par round, following an opening three-over 74, left the North Yorkshire golfer miles adrift of the cut line and with just one more chance to qualify for the 140th Open Championship at Royal St George’s later this month.
The 33-year-old’s disappointing first effort at Le Golf National made a fast start a priority if he wanted any chance of playing at the weekend and Dyson duly delivered with birdies at the first and the par five third.
But a double bogey six at the next undid all that good work and his round began to quickly unravel.
A five at the par four seventh saw him go out in a one-over-par 37 and a further dropped shot at the 11th will have only darkened his mood. It was to get much worse.
A triple bogey seven at the thirteenth was followed by consecutive bogeys at 15 and 16 before Dyson limped out of the competition with another double bogey at the final hole.
That recorded an inward nine of 43 and an overall two round total of 12-over-par.
With Dyson having suffered with back problems before the tournament, making a dramatic flight to France only after having sought medical advice from a specialist in Birmingham, his performance could be down to lack of preparation.
Now he must post a top-five position in the Scottish Open, at the Castle Stuart Links course in Inverness, if he is to play in the year’s third Major championship.
