A Tadcaster man has been charged with attempted murder after a 78-year-old foreign tourist was attacked near York Minster on Friday evening.
The South African alleged victim was on holiday in York when he was allegedly hit on the head with a stone or cobble.
He suffered a "serious" head injury and a hand injury, but his life is not believed to be in danger. He had been taking an evening stroll and seeing the sights near York Minster at the time.
Police arrested a 43-year-old man from Tadcaster in the Deans Park area shortly after the attack.
The tourist was taken to York Hospital for treatment and later released.
