Fulford 2 toppled Wheldrake in division two of the Fulford Ladies Invitation Tennis League and then vowed to do their bit for charity.
Wheldrake led by two games heading into the final round and although Lynette and Kate Brammah beat Fulford’s Wendy Cook and Linda Irving, it was not enough.
Pam Campbell and Elizabeth Mallory won 7-5 against Sarah Smelic and Anna Bradshaw before Lisa Garland and Pauline Craddock sealed the points with a 10-2 win over Ros Latham and Rachel Woolley.
After the match, Fulford captain Craddock convinced her team to sign up to the league’s Breast Cancer Research challenge.
The players are now collecting sponsors at 1p per game won during the course of the season, which is now at the halfway stage.
In division one, there were wins for Dunnington over Knaresborough, Poppleton against York 2, Bishopthorpe over Castlegarth, and York 1 versus Fulford.
Division three leaders Castlegarth beat rivals David Lloyd 60-48, with Trish and Angie Bell top-scoring on 27 games.
Sue Sumner and Joyce Rhodes were the only pair to chalk up three wins as they claimed 31 games in Dunnington’s 68-40 win over Bubwith.
Escrick notched their second win, beating Rowntree Park 60-48 thanks to 29 games from Lauren Hislop and Julia Todd.
Riccall’s seventh win in a row took them top of division four. Michelle Hall and Jenny Tongue took 25 games in a 64-44 success against Knaresborough.
A 28-game haul from Jane Pemberton and Sue Reader helped Cliffe beat Copmanthorpe 67-41.
Pocklington edged a nail-biter against Tollerton 55-53 thanks to a late winning surge from final pair Kate Megginson and Looby Kettlewell.
Helen Williams and Ellie Page’s 25 games aided Bishopthorpe in their push for a narrow win against Sutton-on-Derwent.
Division five leaders Fulford needed 26 games from Jenny Rowland and Georgie Stephenson to beat Dunnington.
David Lloyd went two points clear at the top of division six with a 59-49 success over Stamford Bridge.
New Earswick beat Wilberfoss as Maz Broadbent and Teresa Roberts-Hardy top-scored with 22 games.
Rufforth proved far too strong for Dunnington 4, trouncing them 100-8 in a one-sided game.
