HEAVY rainfall across York, North and East Yorkshire caused flash flooding and sent shoppers scurrying for shelter.

In places, up to 40mm of rain fell yesterday which caused problems for drivers and pedestrians alike as blocked drains overflowed and gutters failed to cope with the deluge.

A forecaster for MeteoGroup said: “There has been a lot of unsettled weather around and it’s likely to stay with us for the next few days, although showers may not be as heavy as they have been, so the advice is to take your umbrella with you if you’re heading out.”
