REGARDING the article on July 16 about parking to stay free in Tadcaster and Sherburn in Elmet, when all the houses and buildings in the centre of Tadcaster were demolished in the late 1960s, the owners put a covenant on the land that parking should be free.
In October 1984, Selby District Council imposed car parking charges and put up ticket machines. The Tadcaster Chamber of Trade (of which I was secretary) challenged this decision, pointing out the covenant.
The council had to remove the ticket machines and parking has remained free ever since.
Jean Ashton, Rosemary Court, Tadcaster.
