YORK'S top golfers ended their Yorkshire Union of Golf Clubs season with a real cliff-hanger against Harrogate.

The last match of the campaign was not decided until the last stroke of the day as the sides finished 18-18 at Kirkbymoorside.

The result hinged on the final match on the course with Malton and Norton's Chris Halley beating Ian Douglas (Pannal) when he made a four on the last hole to Douglas's five.

Earlier in the day, Halley and his Malton club-mate teamed up to halve their foursomes clash with Douglas and Craig Bradley (Otley).

York's foursomes victories came from Alister Smith (Heworth) and Stuart Parkin (Malton and Norton) and the pairing of Steve Dunn (Fulford) and Lee Grant (York) but their team trailed 7-5 going into the singles.

Wins by Martin Brown (Pike Hills), Parkin, Adam Newton (Pike Hills), Adrian Lount (Pike Hills), Nick Marchant (Fulford) and, finally Halley, saw York take the singles 13-11 to finish level.

Brown, Parkin, Grant, Dunn, Jamie Miller (Fulford) and Adam Newton (Pike Hills) are representing York in the 33rd Yorkshire Inter-Union Team Championship at Horsforth tomorrow.
