THIRTEEN proved a lucky number for Selby Bowls Club.
They won York Amateur Bowling Association’s Williamson Cup by toppling Dunnington ‘A’ 86-60.
After the initial exchanges Dunnington led by eight shots, but the 13th end, in which Selby bagged a five and a three, proved a tipping point.
Spurred on by a resounding 32-5 triumph by the rink of Ian Quainton, James Logan, Ian Robb and skip Trevor Quainton Selby ran out comfortable winners.
Meanwhile, the Freedom and Fellowship Cup was seized by Hull Road Park after a 84-70 conquest of Clifton.
Key to the success was a 35-13 victory by the rink of Peter Durkin, Joe Caunt, Kirk Jackson and skip Graham Bell.
For Clifton the rinks of Kevin Liddell and Brian Wilmot excelled.
On the YABA league front, buoyant Selby BC are waiting to take advantage of any slip by York RI Amateurs, who currently head the first division by a slender seven points.
With only one win from their last seven outings, Shipton have spiralled into the relegation zone, where they, Nestlé Rowntree, Holgate WMC and Dunnington are covered by just six points.
While Stewart BC look certain to land the division two crown – they hold a 15-point advantage – the battle for the runners-up position is open to the chasing pack of Burnholme, Dringhouses, West Park and Hull Road Park.
Clifton looked to be doomed, but a huge revival in form has rekindled their tilt at survival.
With games left against Stamford Bridge and Harrogate, it is in their own hands to get themselves out of trouble.
• York RI Amateurs players John Walker, Mike Bruce and Paul Humphreys are in the Yorkshire rink two team for the Middleton Cup clash against hosts Leicestershire at Nottingham BQ on Saturday.
Holgate’s Phil Emmerson is in rink three, York RI’s Mark Clarke in rink four, Holgate’s Phil Parsons in rink five and Dave Attwood, also York RI, in rink six.
