A MASS balloon release marked the completion and handover of a new £7 million school in York.
Main contractor Shepherd Construction organised a balloon race in conjunction with Clifton with Rawcliffe primary school to mark the end of a year-long project to build a new state-of-the-art 3,200m² school building.
Pupils and staff released 500 balloons at 2pm yesterday on the school playing field in Eastholme Drive, Rawcliffe.
They each had a tag, a unique number that matches a number given to the balloon holder, and Shepherd Construction’s contact details.
Anyone who finds a balloon can then contact Shepherd to let them know how far it has travelled and the pupil whose balloon travels furthest will receive a prize at the beginning of the autumn term.
Shepherd Construction began work on the project last July on behalf of City of York Council.
When the new building opens this September, it will bring two schools together under one roof, offering a modern learning environment and valuable external space such as a multi-use games area, sports facilities and play area.
The school also includes a number of environmental features including a biomass boiler, and a system which is able to harvest rain water.
Colin Sargeant, managing director for Shepherd Construction’s East Division, said: “We now look forward to seeing the school move in to the new building and reaping the benefits of occupying a 21st century learning environment.”
Beverley Wright, deputy head teacher at the school, said: “We are very excited about moving into our new school. “I know the present school holds many memories for lots of people but the opportunities the new school will offer are immense.
“The whole process of the new build has been made easier by the excellent working relationship we have had with Shepherd Construction.”
