A SCHOOL garden, started to encourage sustainability and awareness among pupils, has been nominated for a Community Pride Award.
The garden, at Headlands Primary School, Haxby, was started earlier this year by a group of parents with the assistance of local businesses, and has already been a blooming success.
Liz Spain, one of the parents who helped to start the project, said: “A group of us decided it would be a good idea to grow vegetables to encourage the children to think about where their food comes from. I do some gardening at home, but it was just a good way to get the children involved, and they’ve really, really enjoyed it.
The group meet once a week to check on the progress of the garden, which currently features beetroot, leeks, potatoes, kale, cabbage and beans.
Liz said: “We’ve got about ten children in the club this term, with about 38 who want to join. We’ve been really fortunate that every week we have gone out to the garden, the weather has been fine.
She said the garden could not have been built without the help of local businesses, including Opus Landscapes, Stone Plan, and local worker Mick Lambert, as well as cash from school fundraising.
