A CHURCH raider has been jailed for 40 weeks after he tried to evade justice by going on the run.

Adam Craig Hudson broke into the vestry of St Denys’ Church, Walmgate, York, on June 29 and stole £46 in cash.

But when his case was heard at York Magistrates Court last Monday, he left the building before magistrates could pass sentence.

They passed a 40-week prison term in his absence and when he was arrested shortly afterwards he told dock officials he would try to jump the dock because he did not like the sentence.

Magistrates ordered him to appear in handcuffs before them in the secure dock in Courtroom One.

Hudson, 29, of Danebury Drive, Acomb, was jailed for 20 weeks for burglary, plus 20 weeks for a total of three offences of shoplifting, one of attempted theft and one of obstructing police.

He admitted all the offences.
