POLICE are hunting a man who was captured on CCTV moments before allegedly robbing a Pocklington convenience store with a gun.

The man, who was wearing a hat and sunglasses, is said to have walked into the Co-operative store in Market Street and threatened staff before leaving with money.

He is thought to have escaped with hundreds of pounds in the raid at around 1.40pm on Thursday. Paul Wright, supervisor at the Co-op, said: “The guy came in and acted like a customer and pulled a gun out and went for the tills.

“There was not enough in the tills and he went for the safe. He took the members of staff up there and walked out of the shop.

“It lasted about seven minutes, not even that. He just vanished.

“The three members of staff have been given a few days off. Everybody is fine, just shaken up.”

Despite a police helicopter being called and officers conducting a large search with door-to-door inquiries, the man had last night still not been found.

He is described as white, about 6ft 2ins tall, of medium build and aged in his late 30s or early 40s. He was wearing blue baggy trousers, a fleece jacket, black gloves, black hat and black walking boots.

Police want to speak to the driver of a black Transit-style van seen in the area at the time of the incident, as he may be able to help with inquiries.

The offender may have discarded his clothes after leaving the scene. If these items are found, officers have asked people not to touch them and to phone the police.
