COUNCILLORS who proposed extra cash to help York’s voluntary sector have welcomed confirmation of the funding.
City of York Council has agreed to allocate £100,000 to charities, to help them develop ways of delivering services as council budgets are stretched.
The Conservative group on the council included £93,000 of this allocation within their financial proposals for 2011/12 when the authority’s budget was determined in February, although the Labour group which now controls the council voted against the move.
Tory councillor Paul Healey said: “I am pleased to see the Labour cabinet has reversed its initial opposition to supporting local charities in their bid to take on more of the council’s services.
“I can only assume they voted against our original budget motion for ideological reasons as they have kept it all. In fact, they seem to approve of that motion so much that they have now increased spending on three of the schemes we proposed – apprentices, York’s youth café and the voluntary sector – and kept spending the same on the other two.”
