WITH reference to Poppy Memories in The Press, July 20, regarding stating that she went to Bleasdales on Micklegate in 1943, sorry to tell Ms Joan Long, it is incorrect, she had mistaken Raimes Wholesale Chemists, which was in Barker Lane, Bleasdales were always in Colliergate from 1760.
I worked at this firm for eight years, it was situated where Barnitts’ new shop extension is now.
Also Joan Long of Bridlington asks if anyone used to do these kinds of tasks in the “war years”, yes, I was at Fishergate Junior School.
We used to go into the York Cemetery, collecting rose hips to make syrup for coughs, with a 1lb jam jar, and received 6p old money and a badge to wear for school. Happy days.
