I was genuinely amazed while reading the letter from Godfrey Bloom, the UKIP MEP for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire (Letters, July 20).

I did wonder on what authority he bases his comments regarding another European ruling that will be imposed on Britain, that motor vehicle testing will change from the current rules of the first test after three years, then yearly, to first test after four years then every two years.

It can be said that the industry does not make a bad motor car these days, as opposed to the bad old days of the 60s motor cars, where after four or five years the bodies were dropping to bits and with 70,000 miles on the clock, the engines used more oil than petrol, and you were lucky if your car gave you 25 to the gallon.

Nevertheless, while Mr Bloom seems to think this is a good idea and the one sensible thing to come out of Europe, in my experience while owners of classic vehicles and specialist sports cars generally keep their pride and joy in tip-top condition, some owners of run-of-the mill, A to B motors, only carry our any maintenance when absolutely necessary and sometimes dangerous.

This would be a dangerous direction to go in.
