PROPOSALS for a new pilot scheme of 20mph speed limits in York have been welcomed by the city’s Green Party.

City of York Council’s executive member for city strategy, Coun Dave Merrett, will today decide whether to extend the area covered by the reduced speed measures in South Bank, as well as using Murton as a trial for how they could work in villages.

The area of South Bank being considered includes all residential streets between Nunnery Lane and Campleshon Road and between Terry Avenue and Albermarle Road, and follows a Green petition for the community to become a pilot 20mph zone in 2008.

Green activist Andy Chase said: “It’s very welcome to hear more people in Clementhorpe and South Bank will be able to benefit from a 20mph speed limit, which will also help to improve safety on Bishopthorpe Road. I’m sure this proposal will be welcomed by people in the additional areas included in the scheme.”

Green leader Coun Andy D’Agorne said the party was backing the council’s new approach on the issue, describing the stance taken under the previous administration as “piecemeal”.
