I WRITE in support of Mr Shepherdson, who was unable to park, despite his blue badge, in the limited disabled facilities in Acomb (Letters, July 25).

Sadly, Mr Shepherdson is not alone. Ten years ago as a councillor for this area, I started to organise a campaign to help disabled drivers in Acomb. The launch was halted as two teenage females pulled into the three disabled spaces in a very large black car.

When I pointed out that they were blocking the way for disabled drivers, they pointed to a blue badge which showed a photo of an elderly man. They then dashed to the shops, blocking two of the three spaces.

Since then I have become a blue badge holder and it is the norm to have two out of three disabled spaces used by cars without a blue badge.

Last Saturday, on approaching another two female teenagers and waiting to park, I was told, “Don’t worry, we won’t be long we’re just having our lunch.” My reply was sharp and to the point.

During the past ten years I have raised this issue many times – all to no avail.
