LIGHTNING Lee Stewart, York’s newest boxing professional, is hoping to create a storm when he steps into the ring for his second bout.
The 21-year-old rookie made an impressive debut when winning all six rounds against Dan Carr at York’s Energise Centre in May and he will now travel to Barnsley on September 23 in a bid to build on his strong start.
Fighting at the Barnsley Metrodome against an opponent yet to be confirmed, Stewart will box over four three-minute rounds, rather than the six two-minute encounter of his debut, on a bill named The Boys Are Back In Tarn.
Stewart caught the eye at the Energise with a strong effective jab and, while drawing on the positives from that opener, his trainer Glenn Banks is looking for more this time around.
“It’s about building on his experience,” Banks said. “We’ve both had a break and come back refreshed.
“Training camp has started and I am looking for a more mature performance.
“There were some mistakes on debut, of course we take the positives, and I am looking to bring him on gently.
“He did really well, he’s a popular lad on the street and we hope to sell a lot of tickets.”
Also on the bill is Acomb’s fast fighter Matt Doyle.
Twenty four seconds were all he needed to stop Dudley’s Martin Gordon in May and he has been matched with dangerous home fighter Neil Beavers.
Doyle, normally a welterweight, will step up to 11-stone and light-middleweight for the fight – against an opponent who boasts a 6-1-1 record.
Banks added: “This is Matt’s eighth professional fight and he has a 5-1-1 record. He will be the underdog for the fight. We have been told that Beavers doesn’t go backwards.
“Neither does Matt so it could be a bit of a war. Matt just wants to box when he can and he is just looking for the experience.”
