NEARLY £3,000 will go to youth development at Bootham Crescent following another very successful York City Supporters’ Trust golf day at Pike Hills.
Six Minstermen first-teamers – captain Chris Smith, goalkeeper Michael Ingham, midfielders Scott Kerr and Ashley Chambers, and forwards Matty Blair and Jason Walker – were among fans and a host of ex-players who turned out to take on the challenge of 18 holes at the Copmanthorpe course.
It was the fourth time a golf day had been staged to aid the youth team, and a post-round dinner was also attended by youth team coach Steve Torpey.
Nineteen teams took part and 93 points provided the winning score with the team taking the trophy consisting of Steve Knowles, long-time City supporter Robin Longhamer, Neil Smith and John Smith.
Among the ex-players teeing up were Darren Kelly, Dave Dunmore, Dale Banton and Joe Neenan.
Organiser Graham Bradbury said the day had been a tremendous success.
“It was an absolutely fantastic day,” he said. “We raised £2,800 and the generosity of the players has been brilliant. The donations given by some of the City players and sponsors was also a magnificent gesture.
“We know we have been so close to the youth team folding in the past few years and any little amount will help but I would hope this money will make a big inroad to supporting them for next season.”
BARRING a storming round from third-placed Jason Knight, the inaugural York & District Golf League played at Skelton, will come down to a two-man tussle for the title.
Gary Smith currently leads the league by six points over second-placed Shaun Adams with Knight, a further three points behind.
Dan Kilner won the nearest the pin competition in the penultimate week, collecting three bonus points and two ‘2- fore-1’ golf vouchers.
The top six placings with just one more round to play are: 1 Gary Smith (eight events played) 161 points; 2 Shaun Adams (8) 155; 3 Jason Knight (8) 152; 4 Howard Smith (9) 150; 5 Damon Scott (8) 146; 6 Martin Alderson-Crombie (9) 144.
