WITH 55 grandchildren there was never going to be a shortage of guests at Hilda Floyd’s 100th birthday.
Mrs Floyd celebrated her centenary year with a party at the village hall next to her home in Melbourne, near Pocklington.
Born in Thorganby in 1911, she went to work on her family’s farm at the age of 14 and stayed in agriculture, with her husband Jack, throughout her life.
She went on to have eight children, outliving four of them, and so far has 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and 11 step-grandchildren.
After Sunday’s party Mrs Floyd opened the doors of her home to well-wishers yesterday, the actual date of her birthday.
She said: “I had a beautiful day. I couldn’t say how many people were at the village hall but it was well over 100. They came from all the country – I have a very big family.
“I have been busy this morning too. There are folk here having drinks and I am very happy – it’s lovely.”
