AT A time when services are cut and jobs lost, John Jones is quite right to suggest York’s civic number-plate be sold. It is only a plated sign and will still exist even if transferred to a new owner. (The Press, July 29).
The most appropriate Mayoral transport in these times of austerity and sustainability would be a pair of tricycle rickshaws; for which the number plate would not be required.
Moreover, the buyer of the York plate need not have the initials DN. These letters could stand for other things – such as Dangerous Nutcase for example. We have plenty of those around. I think I’ll make a bid.

• SAVE the number plate? Why? okay, it was given to, and hoped it would stay in, York.
Carol Runciman states we shouldn’t sell off an asset for a short-term gain. Wouldn’t it be cheaper, when there is official business for which the Lord Mayor needs a car, to hire one when needed? A magnetic crest could be created and stuck on whatever car is hired and removed after the event.
I’m sure there is a car hire company willing to do that.
