THE legacy of fundraising heroine Jane Tomlinson has ensured a string of good causes across York will receive a cash boost for their work.

The Press teamed up with the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, set up in the memory of the woman who inspired thousands of people through her courageous fight against cancer, earlier this year to give away a sum of money to charities across the city.

They were invited to apply for a share of the pot, containing funds raised through events such as the annual York 10K Run For All, with Jane’s daughter Rebecca leading the Big Charity Giveaway together with other representatives.

The beneficiaries of the funds have now been revealed, with York children’s charity SNAPPY, which will receive £8,200, being among them.

SNAPPY project manager Anne Stamp said: “I saw the notice for the Big Charity Giveaway in The Press and I applied in order to pay for improvements to our medical room, changing table and hoist.

“We are absolutely delighted to hear we have been awarded funding, and the money will give children the privacy they need.”

The York branch of the Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Association, run by Ron Middlemass, will receive £800. It has raised £26,000 since its formation three years ago, with £13,000 being spent on a single crucial piece of machinery to help those, like Ron, who suffer from the neurological disorder.

Ron said the windfall was “absolutely brilliant” and will be spent on two trolleys which allow staff and patients at York Hospital to have access to technology aimed at combating the condition.

He said: “I would have loved to have asked for more, but I’m not asking for a lot in the grand scheme of things and the hospital needed this money desperately.”

Other charities to benefit from a slice of the cash from the giveaway include Woodthorpe after-school club (£670), Westhorpe Playgroup (£1,000), Leeming Road Playgroup (£2,000) and Peter Pan Nursery, which will receive £13,825.

York-based Lollipop, which helps children with hearing difficulties, will receive £660, while £1,600 goes to the Rainbow pre-school group.
