NEW jobs will be created later this month when a supermarket in York is rebranded by its Yorkshire-based owners.

The Netto supermarket, in Layerthorpe, was one of 193 Danish stores bought by Asda last year in a £778 million deal.

On Saturday, the store will close for two weeks until Monday, August 22, when it will reopen as an Asda following a £500,000 refurbishment.

When the buyout took place, Asda said it would be doubling the number of staff at most of the stores around the country, and it has recently confirmed seven new jobs would be created at the Layerthorpe store.

A spokesman for Asda confirmed that the 13 current employees will also retain their jobs, and will undergo a week-long training course prior to the reopening.

When the new store opens, it will stock more than 10,000 grocery products, including own-brand labels, about four times as many as the previous store, plus a PayPoint, lottery and cash machines.

Graeme Wightman, Asda Supermarkets area manager, said: “Despite being a small Asda supermarket we think customers are going to be delighted with the new store. We hope they will be bowled over by the range and there will be no price premium for anything we sell.”
