Malton Tennis Club won a tight Driffield League Cup final at Driffield Recreation Ground, beating Beverley & East Riding 5-4.
Beverley, last year’s Yorkshire champions, were aiming to complete a league and cup double having already secured the Driffield League title.
Malton drew first blood, winning two of the first three rubbers with first pair Andrew Cooke and captain Angus Smith pipping their Beverley counterparts 8-7 in a tie-break.
The underdogs edged further ahead in the second set of matches with another 8-7 tie-break win – this time from Alastair Barron and York’s Dominic Shread – to give Malton a 4-3 lead with three rubbers remaining.
Ian Stansfield and Nigel Skelton, of York, were unable to get Malton that decisive fifth rubber but the unbeaten York-based pair Cooke and Smith held their nerve to close out the match and give Malton a 5-4 victory.
