I AM disappointed to see that the fantastic tourist attraction of the Wheel may not be returning to York (The Press, August 2), but it was interesting to hear from the Museums Trust that they will be opening up the gardens to the rear of the art gallery.
This is great news that they will be investing £300,000 in bringing a small amount of tourism into York from another public gardens.
However, the article mentioned that this will be supported by City of York Council. As nice the idea is, that there will be some more public gardens, this should not be publicly funded.
If York were looking at ways to bring in more tourism they could do a lot worse than looking at the untidy waterways. There is such potential to bring in new tourists just from tidying up the rivers.
I do not mean the River Ouse, which with a lack of mooring does not really try to attract too many boats, but at least it is clean and tidy and when the sun shines is full of people along its banks.
I think the council needs to really think about where to spend the money on tourism.
