IT’S not every school that has its own conservatory.
But for youngsters at one York village primary school that’s precisely what they will have when they return from the summer holidays.
The Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, dropped in at Copmanthorpe Primary School before the summer break to officially open the new conservatory-cum-classroom.
Judith Rigg, head teacher, said that with 328 pupils the school was already large and in September the foundation stage class would grow in size so the conservatory has come just at the right time.
Miss Rigg said the building has been about ten years in the planning so it was put to use right away and would continue to be put to good use when the autumn term started in September.
She said: “The new space is wonderful, it lets the light flood in and will mean that, not only will our foundation stage be able to use it, but children throughout the school will also use it as part of our outdoors provision.
“Coun Horton is one of our governors and has been part of making this building become a reality so it seemed fitting that he should be the one to officially open it.”
Miss Rigg said the money for the building came from the school’s capital reserves and the Lord Mayor was given a guided tour by youngsters after the official opening.
