THREE more sporting heroes have been nominated for the 2011 Community Pride Awards.

Barry Casterton, of Boroughbridge Road, was nominated by Paul Bird, a sports coach in the city, for his behind-the-scenes work with a number of football teams in York.

Paul said: “Barry has worked tirelessly as either secretary or chairmen on all the junior football leagues in York, including the City of York Girls, and has also helped establish a very successful under-19s league in the area.

“Thousands of young boys and girls play football on a weekend without realising how many hours are spent arranging and rearranging league and cup fixtures, collating results, and ensuring new FA rules are disseminated to clubs and teams.”

Alan Spencer Allison, or “Spen” to his friends, has been nominated by John Church, of Acomb, for his work with York Amateur Rugby League which dates back to the late 1950s.

John said: “Cut Spen, and you will surely find he is a Rugby League man to his very core.

“More than 50 years of Spen’s life has been dedicated to the development of amateur Rugby League here in York, as well as further afield.”

In his 50-plus years working with the sport, Spen has managed York teams which faced opponents from as far away as New Zealand and Australia, and in 2007 he was given a unique award from the York & District Sports Federation for his commitment to the sport.

Frank Stones been similarly devoted cricket, and was nominated by his friend Eric Radcliffe.

Frank was elected to the league’s management committee in 1957, elected chairman in 1987, and is still a life member of the league, despite retiring in 2008.

Eric said: “I am nominating Frank for his devotion and contribution to the HPH York Vale Cricket League (formerly the York & District Saturday Cricket League), covering a period of 52 years.

“I believe that for all the work he has done for the league covering half a century, the Sporting Hero award has been well and truly earned.”
