A FAULTY pumping station near York disrupted the water supply for up to 5,000 of homes in the city.
Residents throughout large areas of York reported low water pressure yesterday at about 7.30am, a time when many people were trying to use showers and kitchen sinks before work.
Worst affected were homes in Acomb, Poppleton, Dunnington, The Burton Stone Lane area and Badger Hill.
One resident of Westfield Place, in Acomb, said: “The water didn’t cut out completely but the pressure was only enough to be able to brush your teeth. There is no way you could have done the washing up or run a bath.”
Despite the disruption to homes, most businesses in the city experienced few problems. Knavesmire Manor Hotel in Tadcaster Road said only one guest had reported low water pressure yesterday morning, while Nestle, York Hospital, The Hilton Hotel and Poppleton Garden Centre all said they had not noticed a problem.
A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said yesterday that an estimated 1,000 to 5,000 customers had experienced “short-lived” disruption to their water pressure.
He said: “We’ve had an issue with one of our pumping stations which pumps water to a number of properties around the A64 ring road, Askham Bryan to Dunnington, York.
“Some customers were temporarily without water whilst we fixed the problem. Water supplies have now been restored but it will take a couple of hours for water levels and pressure to return to normal. We would like to apologise to customers for any disruption caused and thank them for their patience.”
