Wigginton Road, York, will be closed tonight after a burst pipe damaged the road surface.

The 60 centimetre water main burst earlier in the afternoon and flooded the road, going over the kerb.

A spokesman from Yorkshire Water said the road would be closed at 10pm tonight to enable repairs to be done overnight.

Steve Widdowson, a resident of Wigginton Road, said he saw a drain bubbling over at about 3.30pm, but then the water erupted out of the middle of the road.

He said rush hour traffic was disrupted with cars only able to drive on certain parts of the road, that weren’t buckled by the burst.

He said the flood stretched for a couple of hundred yards from the entrance of Nestle to the properties, but a drain on the opposite side of the road, which was still working was stopping the flood from threatening properties.

The Yorkshire Water spokesman said they would be carrying out the repairs to the water main and the road at 10pm to minimise disruption to traffic and hoped it would be finished by tomorrow morning.

“We would like to apologise to local residents for a burst we have on one of our water mains on Wigginton Road and thank them for reporting it. They are the eyes and ears on the ground that enable us to get out in good time,” he said.
