COSMETIC contact lenses are being sold illegally in East Yorkshire.

People are being warned they could be putting their sight at risk by wearing lenses that are unsuitable for the eye or if they are using them incorrectly.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Trading Standards Service is warning people they are being sold illegally at some outlets within the area, such as hairdressers, beauticians, novelty shops and market stalls.

Cosmetic lenses, also known as plano or zero-powered lenses, are coloured, patterned or novelty contact lenses used for fashion, fancy dress or to enhance a person’s appearance. They are particularly popular among young people, who can increase the risk of infection by sharing them with friends.

The law states that lenses can only be sold where a registered optometrist, dispensing optician or medical practitioner is on the premises. Councillor Jane Evison said: “I would strongly urge that people only buy lenses from a legal source, have them fitted by a professional and follow all advice about how to wear and look after the lenses. Failure to do so may cause serious eye problems.”
