THE short-sighted decision by NATO countries to bomb Gaddafi’s forces to protect the “rebel” forces in Libya has been tragically unsuccessful, resulting in many civilian casualties and deaths from the very beginning.
It has never been possible to avoid civilian casualties when both sides are in close conflict, battling in suburban and similar places.
After several months the NATO foreign ministers decided to recognise the “rebels” as the ruling power in Libya and expel the Libyan ambassador from London.
Another short-sighted decision. The very word “rebel” should be a clue.
How can it be known who they actually represent and does each tribe within the country agree who is “in charge”?
The recent assassination of a general who was alleged to have change sides in favour of the rebels casts severe doubt on the latest mistaken decision by NATO.
The usual line from “democratic” countries is when dictators are removed, a democratic election is arranged to choose the new ruling party. Gaddafi is still there! The “plot” has definitely been lost in this case.
