IF time flies when you’re having fun, In Love With Oblivion may be the aural equivalent of misery. With this, their second album, Crystal Stilts have managed to create an album which will make any journey feel twice as long.
To be fair, there’s no problem with the musicianship – the songs are well crafted, and the music is often fast, even fun. The vocals are fine too, with Brad Hargett doing his best slo-mo Ian Curtis, but therein lies the problem – the whole doesn’t work as well as the individual parts. Tracks vary in length and quality, too.
Opener Sycamore Tree runs out of steam before its five minute plus runtime, Alien Rivers lasts more than seven minutes, but the great Half A Moon running at 2.44 shows that in some cases, less is more. Could be better given time and re-listening, but first impressions last.
