SCORES of children gathered together to celebrate National Playday by throwing themselves into an array of fun activities.

Events in the York area on Wednesday took place at Dunnington play area and Hurst Hall Community Centre in Strensall, and were enjoyed by a huge number of children, with the Strensall session alone attracting 180 visitors.

Activities included cap creation, clay modelling, water play and dance classes.

Lynette Nelson, community development worker for Army Welfare Services, said of the Strensall event: “It was a fantastic child-centred free play afternoon – with lots of fun, smiles and laughter.”

She said: “It’s a great way to show the community the importance of play.”

The Army Welfare Services work together with the Strensall community to provide weekly events, with a larger event taking place annually on the first Wednesday in August.
