Heworth completed a league and cup double with a nail-biting victory over Osbaldwick in the York & District Junior Cricket Association’s Burn & Company under-11s League play-off final at Selby.
The Incrediball final was a repeat of the cup final of a fortnight before and, although Heworth were triumphant again, Osbaldwick put up a sterner test this time round with Heworth not securing the result until the penultimate over.
Osbaldwick were restricted to a score of 217 by a tight Heworth bowling performance, led by Edward Rayner and Euan Collins, who took 3-11 and 2-0 respectively.
They were backed up most notably by Luke Huffer, pictured, Dan Davidson and Tommy Pearson, who performed well with the ball.
Harry Sheppeard top-scored for Osbaldwick with 11, while Kewell Ford and James Hattee both made ten.
Chasing a modest target and with victory in sight, nerves looked as if they might get the better of the Heworth team as the Osbaldwick attack stepped up their game to take some key wickets.
However, captain Ryan Whitley steadied the ship, hitting the game’s only boundary in the penultimate over to settle Heworth nerves and all but guarantee the title for his team.
Matthew Popely was Osbaldwick’s star bowler, picking up 2-7. Hattee and Sheppeard also did well, finishing with figures of 1-7.
Zone ‘B’ runners up Osbaldwick had reached the final with a semi-final win over zone ‘A’ champions Acomb.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Hutton Bridge face Londesborough Park in tomorrow’s U11s cup final as they aim to wrap up a league and cup double with the hard ball.
If Bridge win it would complete an unprecedented set of four doubles across the board this season – with York U15s, Londesborough Park U13s and Heworth’s U11s Incrediball team all dominating at their respective levels.
Tomorrow’s final at Londesborough Park will start at 1.30pm.
