NEIL Ferguson beat off competition from Iain Bruce and Jim Batt to win Heworth GC’s 36-hole Centenary Club Championship, writes George Bouras.
Kind conditions helped a large field to post outstanding scores, with youngster Jack Hagyard, carding 67 and 69 to bag the trophy for the best nett score over the two rounds.
Ferguson laid the groundwork for his victory in the morning’s first round with a 71 and was able to take a three-shot lead into the afternoon’s climax.
Bruce and Batt, Ferguson’s rivals, kept pace with him in the second round but were unable to eat away at the advantage he had been able to build up earlier in the day.
Ferguson held his nerve, posting a 74, to pip the two-man chasing pack to the prize by two and three strokes respectively.
Centenary club captain Joe Baxter presented the trophies.
