MAXINE GORDON and HANNAH CLUGSTON scout the streets of York to find the city’s most fashionable folk. GARRY ATKINSON gets them to smile for the camera.

Zara Syrett, 16, from Hull
Zara has just left school to begin a modelling career. Her colourful outfit features trousers, sandals, necklace and headscarf from Primark, top and glasses from Topshop.

She admits to being a fashion chameleon. “I change my look every day; I can be really punky too – I just bought a pair of Dr Martens the other day. I never go out without making an effort because I love fashion.”

Her role model would be Lady Gaga: “She’s amazing”.

Zara’s fashion loves are “heels and handbags” and she loathes “leggings and Ugg boots”.

She goes style hunting at Topshop and vintage stores and loves to customise things she buys. “I don’t like wearing things that everybody else is wearing.”

Sally Ball, 15, from Sunderland
Sally’s bright orange dress is from All Saints and her yellow bag from River Island, her sandals are from Primark.
She adores vintage clothes. “I love to wear things I am comfortable in and I also like to find different things.”

Diana Vickers and the Olsen twins look good in her opinion; but what doesn’t wash are socks with sandals.

When out shopping, her first stops are Topshop and vintage stores.

Toni Miller, 18, from Headingley, Leeds
Toni’s dress is from Topshop, her bag is from Greece and her shoes from Toms And her fashion philosophy? “Everyone should dress individually, I don’t like following trends, I like punky stuff.”

Toni says she hates girly fashion and but loves the style of the Olsen twins.

Her favourite shop is Topshop.

Jonathan Roman-Wilkinson, 19, shop assistant from York
Jonathan works at All Saints in Fenwick – and his entire outfit is from All Saints.

He says: “I like unique brands such as Each To Their Own in Leeds and Sheffield. I don’t want to look like everybody else; and what ever I buy, I try to make it my own.”

He hates men’s fashion that is too feminine; “like really long cardis”.

He loves scoop T-shirts and All Saints’ knitwear.

York Press: Chloe Dionne Whittle

Chloe Dionne Whittle, 18, from Bury
Chloe’s waistcoat, bag and sandals are from River Island; her hat from Accessorize and her dress from DB3 boutique in Bury.

Chloe says: “I like to have my own style and not look like anyone else. I try to look sophisticated and like a lady.”

She like the look of Nicole Scherzinger: “I think she’s really beautiful.”

One fashion looks she loathes is goth. Her favourite shop is River Island.

York Press: Fiona Clarkson

Fiona Clarkson, 32, library assistant from Pickering
Fiona says she is thrifty and loves shopping in charity shops and on eBay. She is wearing a Gap dress bought in a second-hand shop and her sandals and scarf are from Ebay. Her bag is from TKMaxx.

She says: “I love to get a bargain. Also if you buy things that are last season you find that other people aren’t wearing them.”

Her favourite shops are Zara, Topshop and H&M.

York Press: James Snowden and Rosie Burch

James Snowden, 20, and Rosie Burch, 20, both from Skelton, York
James’s hat and braces are from H&M; vest and shorts from Top Man, and shoes from Barratts.

His fashion philosophy is simple: “If I see something and I want it, I’ll buy it.”

At present he is big on the blue stuff. “I love wearing double denim.”

Style influences come in the guise of Noel Gallagher and Ian Brown. His top shopping spot is Top Man.

Rosie’s dress is from a boutique in Thirsk, her bag from New Look and her floral hair band was bought at a music festival. Her big fashion loves are florals and double denim.

She is a fashion magpie, picking gems from all over the place, she says, adding her favourite haunts are charity shops, vintage sources and independent boutiques.

York Press: Rosie Wormald and Saroj Spickett

Rosie Wormald, 17, from Kexby, and Saroj Spickett, 16, from Leeds
Rosie, left, wears a sarong, a vest from H&M, a belt from kids DKNY, a crochet waistcoat and fringed bag from New Look. Her espadrilles are from a supermarket in France.

She says: “I like to wear what I want and I don’t like not getting looked at.”

She loves “boho and hippy stuff” and maxi dresses and hates Ugg boots.

The best place to get clothes, she finds, are H&M, New Look, “and my mother’s wardrobe”.

Saroj is wearing a dress from New Look and “the famous £1 sandals from Primark”. Her sunglasses are from New Look and bag from South Africa.

She loves “anything that looks good – especially if it is high-waisted” and hates “trousers that aren’t skinny – and leggings”.

Her style icon would be Rachel Bilson and her favourite shops are New Look and Topshop.
