A YORK St John graduate and her new husband have been killed in a quad bike crash whilst honeymooning in the Maldives.

Emma Gray, a primary school teacher who was a student at York St John in 2007, died in the horror smash alongside her husband Jonathan Gray on the paradise island of Kuredu on Saturday just a week after they wed.

Emma, 25, and Jonathan, in his late 20s, flew to the resort they married at St Bartholomew's church in the village of Ripponden, near their home in Halifax, West Yorkshire, last Saturday.

They were being given a lift back to the four-star Kuredu island Hotel and Spa when their bike, driven by a man who knew the island's roads, ploughed into a tree.

The driver was yesterday being treated at the islands' ADK Male Hospital.

About a dozen floral tributes were left at the couple's home in Halifax, along with teddy bears and an empty bottle of champagne.

Friends of the couple visited the house to lay flowers and console each other.

Later, the brother of Emma Gray, who did not give his name, arrived at the property and described them "as a wonderful couple".

He added: "It is all too raw at the moment."

The day before her wedding, Emma told of her excitement. She wrote on Facebook: "Very excited and nervous about one of the biggest days of my life x a big thanks got everyones well wishes and support x cu soon."

Two days later she switched her relationship status from "engaged" to "married" and joked with friends about ditching her maiden name Oldfield and taking Jonathan's surname, Gray.

Police detectives on the idyllic pacific island have set to work investigating just what may have caused the fatal accident to have happened, but no further information regarding the deaths Jonathan and Emma Gray has been released.

It is understood that the injured driver of the quad bike could face prosecution over the deaths.
