MORE than 100 cyclists raced through the historic streets of the city centre as they competed in the second annual York Cycling City Races.

The event, organised by Clifton Cycling Club, saw crowds gather to watch cyclists of differing ages and abilities battle it out on a closed course with York Minster as the backdrop.

The circuit included Blake Street, St Sampson’s Square and Goodramgate, with a sweep past the Minster to finish in Duncombe Place.

Among the well-known faces to compete in the race was elite cyclist Malcolm Elliot, who rides for Motorpoint.

Jason Drake, of Clifton Cycling Club, said: “This is the second year we have run it in the historic centre. While there is quite a lot of city centre racing now, to be able to ride in York is pretty unique.”

Events began at 5pm with the Brompton Team Challenge for folding bikes.

It was followed by a youth race and a race for club cyclists, including members of host club Clifton CC.

An hour-long Elite race followed, with a prize-giving ceremony to close the event.

Later, York City Screen showed Vittorio De Sica’s classic 1948 film The Bicycle Thieves.

Graham Titchener, the City of York Council representative for the event, said: “This is a big national event and is part of a cycle racing calendar. To have something like this in York’s event calendar is great for residents and for businesses. Cycling clubs have wanted races in York for many years. It’s also promoting cycling, which helps with congestion, can get you places quicker during rush hour and is good for you.”
