A CYCLING campaigner has warmly welcomed the installation of a new cycle and footbridge over the River Foss in York.
The Press reported last week that the bridge had been lowered into position to provide a new link between Navigation Road and the Hungate development.
Paul Hepworth, of the Cyclists’ Touring Club, said the bridge was part of a long planned link from the Sustrans Foss Island path at James Street/Hallfield Road, to the city centre.
He said when the new Defra buildings were built nearby, the Government had refused to countenance a cycle link running through the Defra site, but the cycle lobby was urged by councillors not to “rock the boat” because of the large number of jobs at stake.
Mr Hepworth said: “It’s been a long time coming, but very worthwhile.”
