York Archaeological Trust has just published The Changing Face Of Clifton, the latest book in the trust’s popular oral history series.
This is the story of Clifton’s expansion from rural village to sprawling suburb through the voices of some of those who have taken part in its development.
As well as interviewing people who have lived or worked in the area, oral historian Van Wilson gained access to unpublished archives, correspondence and photographs from the late 19th century onwards.
Look North’s Harry Gration, who attended St Peter’s School (featured in the book), contributed the foreword to the volume.
He recalls being disciplined for refusing to buy provisions for one of the senior boys as his beloved Leeds United was on the TV playing Liverpool in the FA Cup Final at the time.
