LEADERS York ‘A’ trounced Thornaby 105-60 in division one of the Yorkshire Over-55s Indoor Bowls League.
York’s away rinks gave the home side an advantage as they left last season’s runners-up Thornaby with a one-shot lead, having won 41-40 on aggregate.
Geoff Walker’s team had a narrow 13-12 lead before they picked up a six on the 15th end, but a single then a four to the home side meant the two teams went into the last end level at 20-20.
However, York came away with an excellent 22-20 victory.
Graham Instone’s team were tied at 11-11 but then won five successive ends to lead 18-11.
They lost four on the trot to go into the last end 20-18 down but, crucially for the aggregate points, they picked up a single on the last to only go down 20-19.
At home, both rinks made easy work of their games with Graham Brooke’s team making the most of a good start, having led 14-1 after nine ends.
A seven on the 17th end moved them 29-7 ahead and they won 32-11.
Malcolm Thompson’s team also had the upper hand but the visitors were threatening to come back into the game after picking up a three and laying shot.
However, Thompson played a perfect last wood, which trailed the jack and gave his side a seven to lead 20-8. They went on to win 32-9.
York picked up 16 points from the game to remain top of the table.
In division two, New Earswick were disappointed to lose to Featherstone ‘B’ 79-63, although they picked up six points thanks to both home rinks winning.
Barry Harrison’s side were always on top at Huntington Road and finished up 24-15 victors.
Barry Johnson’s team won their last three ends, scoring five shots, to draw 17-17, only for the visitors to have a quarter of their score deducted for only playing three players.
Away, Ralph Tiplady’s side picked up a four on the last, but it was little consolation as they went down 26-16, while Terry Shepherdson’s team were beaten 25-6.
