COUNCIL workers in Selby are to be encouraged to drive more environmentally-friendly vehicles through a scheme which is set to be introduced in the new year.
Selby District Council’s executive has been recommended to approve bringing in a salary-sacrifice initiative allowing them to lease low-emission vehicles from a private firm with the aim of helping the authority to cut its emissions.
They would pay for the cars through a monthly wage deduction which the council has said could save staff £1,200 a year and also reduce the authority’s National Insurance contributions, although employees with less than five years to go before their retirement have been warned joining the scheme could affect their final-salary pension.
It would be run through a firm called Tusker Direct as part of a contract which has already been introduced for staff at North Yorkshire County Council.
The Selby authority’s executive will decide whether to introduce the green car lease scheme when it meets on January 5.
