Workers at Nationwide Building Society in Parliament Street, York, asked people to drop in for a brew and a chat in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Branch manager Michelle Ruddock said: "The doors were open to anyone who wanted to join us for a coffee.

"The work that Macmillan does and the support that it offers for people living with cancer in York is invaluable. This event gives all of us a chance to show our support and demonstrate our thanks."

Nationwide branches all over the country were taking part in the event and participants who made donations were expected to raise more than £6 million for the charity.

A coffee morning held at Home York, a sheltered housing complex in Danesmead Close, Fulford, raised £333 for the charity.

Organiser Catie McLaverty, 65, said: "The coffee morning went off very well indeed. We all had a nice time"
