Selby will host its very own District Olympics this summer to celebrate the Olympic torch passing through the area.
The torch will be taken through Camblesforth, Selby, Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash and Tadcaster on June 19, before arriving in York, and events to welcome it are already being organised by local authorities and groups, including the Selby District Olympics.
The events will take place on the weekend of June 23 and 24, with sports clubs and community groups set to organise events which promote healthy lifestyles and inspire residents to get involved with sport and cultural activities.
Coun Gillian Ivey, deputy leader of Selby District Council, said: “We’re delighted that the Olympic Torch Relay will be coming through our district.
“This gives residents of the district a unique and very special opportunity to witness the spectacle of the Olympic Flame, and to come along and join in the celebrations as we welcome the flame and the torchbearers into our communities to mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics. It’s a real opportunity to show off the growing community spirit in our towns and villages.”
Activities are currently being considered by each of the town and parish ccuncils, together with local schools and community groups, alongside the police, fire and rescue service and Selby College.
The town and parish councils involved are organising and promoting their own events and activities but have come together to form the Selby District Torch Relay Group.
Activities already announced include paralympic events, which able-bodied people will also be welcome to join in, and opportunities for free gym and Zumba sessions.
Full details of the Selby District Olympics are expected within the next few months, but to get involved or organise an event, phone Robin Bedford at Selby’s Abbey Leisure Centre on 01757 213758.
