WORK has started on clearing a semi-derelict site behind York Barbican where a new 165-bedroom hotel is planned.

The Press reported earlier this year that a Hilton Garden Inn was set to be built on the site of the former Barbican swimming pool, after planning permission was granted by City of York Council.

The scheme by developers Broadhall, which was set to create 40 full-time posts and additional part-time jobs, included a restaurant, bar, meeting and function rooms, a business centre, health and fitness facilities.

Councillors heard there would also be a drop-off area for guests next to the auditorium, as well as public open space and a link route for pedestrians and cyclists between Paragon Street and Kent Street.

The land has lain overgrown and fenced off since the centre closed in the mid 2000s, even though the auditorium finally re-opened last year under new operators SMG, but workmen have this week been cutting back vegetation on parts of the site.

A spokeswoman for Hilton Worldwide spokesperson said yesterday the business was in an exciting phase of growth and it was looking at many locations around the UK to introduce various brands from its portfolio.

“York is a destination which continues to attract our interest – we already operate the upscale Hilton York, on Tower Street in the heart of the city,” she said.

“We are in discussions regarding sites in York, though nothing has been confirmed at this stage.”

The hotel proposals have been welcomed previously by York council leader James Alexander as good news for York and its economy.

Planning permission was granted after Broadhall agreed to lower the size of the building from seven to six storeys and use zinc sheeting rather than limestone at its entrance, following objections from English Heritage.

The agreement came after last-minute talks between officers and the developers saved the project from being refused consent.
