BUSINESSES in the Selby district are being urged to seize a golden opportunity when the Olympic torch is carried through the area this summer.
The flame will make its way through Camblesforth, Selby, Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash and Tadcaster on June 19 before its overnight stay in York.
A string of events is set to be organised to celebrate its arrival.
Selby District Council is now encouraging firms to start planning for the day and play their part in boosting visitor numbers in the district, as well as ensuring the torch has a “smooth, safe and memorable journey” through the area.
The council’s deputy leader, Coun Gillian Ivey, said: “We view the torch relay as a fantastic event for the whole of the district and we hope local businesses will agree.
“Not only is it a unique and very special opportunity for residents to witness the spectacle of the Olympic flame, it’s also a golden chance for businesses to join in the event.
“We expect many more people to be out and about in the district, joining in with the celebrations as we welcome the flame and the torchbearers into our communities to mark the countdown to the London 2012 Olympics.”
Town and parish councils along the route are working with local schools and community groups as part of the Selby District Torch Relay Group, which also includes the emergency services, North Yorkshire County Council and Selby College. Businesses are being asked to be aware of the impact the route may have on deliveries on June 19.
Coun Ivey said: “It’s a real opportunity to show off the growing community spirit in our towns and villages, but local business may need to plan ahead to ensure the event brings no disruption to them.”
Full details of the route can be found at london2012.com and a timetable of Selby events will be released nearer the time.
