A DRY start to yesterday’s bank holiday helped to boost numbers visiting a village celebration.

The Copmanthorpe Street Fair, now in its 22nd year, was opened by Look North presenter Claire Frisby, and saw scores of local residents visit Low Green to enjoy stalls, a model railway and other events, with funds going towards local charities and overseas volunteers.

Local resident Roy Piercy said the event was as popular as ever, helped in part by the good weather early on. He said: “I think people went early just in case it rained, but it was really well attended.

“It’s a very popular event, and has been for quite some time.

“This year, there was live music, home-made food and cakes, and the children loved the model steam train running up and down the pavement.”

Across the region, the bank holiday weather surprised many, with bright sunshine for the majority of North Yorkshire, despite forecasts of heavy rain following the wettest April on record. However, the threatened rain did arrive in the afternoon.

The Met Office has no weather warnings in place for the rest of the week, and though showers are expected today, and tomorrow, forecasts predict a settled, bright and mainly dry weekend.
